Candidates' responses are requested by Saturday, June 14th.The questions are presented by Henry Citizens for Responsible Government, a registered political action committee. The PAC has no party allegiance and seeks only to inform voters of pertinent information. The questions are divided into sections designed to reveal to voters the mindset of the candidate. Candidates are asked for honest, considered responses so that voters will have fair notice of the intentions of our county’s next chief executive.

Candidates are asked to provide as much or as little information and opinion as they desire. Candidate responses for any listed topic are not limited to the stated questions. Candidates are free to express additional ideas and opinions on any topic not listed. It is hoped the candidates will demonstrate a willingness and ability to effectively communicate their positions and goals for the county.

Responses will not be edited or shared among the candidates prior to publication. The questions and responses will be published via the Internet and/or other media outlets. Responses will not be published until all candidate's responses are received, unless individual candidates decline to respond by June 14, 2008.

The idea that candidates should openly and honestly tell citizens how they think and how they view operations of county government seemed easy enough. Talk is cheap, but putting your positions in writing gives citizens a way to enforce accountability.

A person seeking the chairmanship cannot be expected to know everything. But we can respect the one who thoroughly researches an issue and communicates his understanding and beliefs.

When you believe in your platform, agendas and policies it shows courage to stand tall and speak your mind. That is rare.

Some candidates have a record they must defend. They may have strayed from their original positions or even lied to gain votes. When asked hard questions that many people want answered, they play dodge ball.

Some candidates prefer to remain silent. Perhaps they fear a voter may hear something he does not like. Maybe he thinks an opponent will steal his ideas. Regardless of strategy, this candidate is also playing dodge ball. It is difficult to say why a “good strategy” includes refusal to lay your cards on the table.

And there are the ones who really do not know how to communicate with voters. Maybe, as one told me, "too many people expected him to know too many answers, and that is not the job of a Chairman.” It is hard to believe voters want a chairman who cannot express knowledge and opinions about countywide policy decisions.

If the candidates refuse to answer the questions that have been put forth in this forum I can not i good conscience support their bid to lead.

The people running for the top job on the BOC cannot have the answer for everything. But they could reasonably find the answer to the subject being posted. The people of Henry County will look to those who try to find an answer and stand by their position and not be influenced by outside sources.
