The Talibaptists
The Al Jazeera Constipation featured a guest editorial by Leonard Pitts, a Miami Herald columnist. As usual, I was insulted by the anti-Christian position and categorical denunciation of Florida’s Katherine Harris for expressing her religious beliefs during a campaign. Pitts simply followed the drive-by media template by framing everything about Harris as dangerous or fraudulent. The AJC deemed a piece about a UGA frat house worthy of online publication, but not this one – so no link is available.
Harris gave an interview with the weekly newspaper of the Florida Baptist State Convention. In it she said the separation of church and state is a “lie” and warned that if Christians don’t stand for election, we will end up a “nation of secular laws.” We must consider her audience and her supposed freedom of self expression. Her follow-up statement drew the ire of some Christians, Jews and at least one atheist: “… If you are not electing Christians, then in essence you are going to legislate sin.”
The atheist condemned Harris’s “religious bigotry.” It’s odd that a professed non-believer in God would attack bigotry on religious grounds. As an atheist he has chosen exclusion from the class which Harris represents. The incongruity of an atheist claiming discrimination by professing believers leaves me scratching my head.
Harris is a religious fanatic. She is a “train wreck,” to quote Pitts, while he acknowledges that the forces of Christian fundamentalism have made terrific inroads into the Republican mainstream. Yet his argument continues that the GOP’s Christians want a theocracy. Pitts seems to contradict himself, at least in the consistency of his rhetoric. On the one hand, only knuckle-dragging Neaderthals profess and proclaim devote religious faith. Yet, that same group represetns an educated, sophisticated political and social entity. Such blather from the anti-Christian Left has become commonplace fodder. If not for the un-religious or devoutly secular among us, the mantra would fall on deaf ears.
Here is the crux of it. Pitts says, “After 25 years of watching the Talibaptists take over school boards, mayor’s offices, the presidency – 25 years of watching them grow ever more bold in encroaching the rights and freedoms of their fellow Americans – I take Harris at her word.” His cute comparison to the truly oppressive, murderous fascists engaged in a war against our nation betrays his own agenda. His use of President Bush’s “take them at their word” comment declares American Christianity equal in nature and evil intent to the very enemy we are fighting.
ACLU lawyers make a living at denouncing every aspect of Christianity and religiosity in the public forum. The liberal mantra is all about our Constitution being a living document that must be changed or reinterpreted to meet evolving societal norms. It proves their inability to accept authority over ego. The so-called ‘wall of separation” really is bogus because the only real Constitutional prohibition concerns creating laws in regard to an establishment of religion. Believers have become educated to the perversion of our Constitution over the last 50 years. Believers know and revere the prohibition against recreating the Church of England. They also know the historical and traditional role of righteous people in government.
Religious people have certain rules based on a book about faith with a lot of witnesses to that faith. God is not a Secret Santa. His commands are not whatever we want them to be, and the Bible is not a “living document.” Unlike the liberal’s pseudo-religion of secular self gratification, for Christians and other believers morality exists outside of egotistical, materialistic, fickle megalomania. The true believer’s rules are decreed by a legislator whose opinions are not subject to appeal by the ACLU. The true believer cannot discover transient circumstances that may suddenly allow endorsement of the latest socially or politically correct fad.
That is why today’s liberals fear the true believer, the true patriot, the dedicated public servant. These are people who recognize and respect truth, honor and authority. Secularists are constantly comparing Christians to Nazis, and now to the Taliban, but it’s always the godless that cut off the heads of the infidel. By their deeds you will know them.
By the way, Katherine Harris won the primary.
