House Bill 1033

PLEASE SUPPORT HOUSE BILL 1033 – Otherwise, we have no voice or vote!

State Representative John Lunsford is the author of a Bill (HB 1033) that would require a voter referendum before elected officials can sign agreements for commuter rail. Kay Pippin through the Chamber has launched a campaign against John and his Bill.

There are two issues at stake. The first issue is whether Henry County will get sucked into long-term taxation to pay for operating costs of the commuter rail. The proposed site in Hampton will not serve 98% of our county! But our commissioners CAN vote their support and agree to financial backing.

The second issue is whether taxpayers should get to vote on the project. State Rep. John Lunsford, R-McDonough, said his bill 1033 mandating a popular vote on the project could effectively “kill” it if it makes its way into law. If it doesn’t, he said, the line is a forgone conclusion. “If I let that bill come through the House, it’s up to the voters,” Lunsford said at a joint breakfast meeting of Henry’s commissioners and legislative delegation in Atlanta. “If I don’t let that bill come through the House, you’re going to get a rail line,” he said.

EVERYBODY in the House and Senate KNOWS THE VOTERS DO NOT WANT THE RAIL LINE!! We especially do not want to pay with our taxes to support rail operating costs and subsidize development!

*Henry’s Chamber of Commerce is NOT the TAXPAYER’S FRIEND*

The Henry County Chamber of Commerce sent a letter to the House Transportation Committee members saying, “We believe that singling out a commuter rail option and installing a required "advisory" referendum for each and every community that might be served by such a network, is to doom such a network.

Number 1: The Vote would not be “advisory.” It would clearly tell the will of the voters. The Chamber of Commerce is slanting the truth to advance their agenda!

Number 2: The only way to force a taxpayer subsidy for Southern Railway AND give developers free reign is to DENY US A VOTE!

WHAT THEY ARE REALLY SAYING: Do not allow taxpaying voters to have a voice in this matter!
