Hearing on House Bill 1033
Hearing on House Bill 1033 - Be sure your voice is heard!
There will be a hearing on House Bill 1033 on Friday, Feb. 17th at 9:30am at the Capitol.
This Bill is very important to every taxpayer in Henry County! It was introduced by Rep. John Lunsford to insure there is a referendum allowing us to vote on financing for a commuter rail.
As it stands now the Chambers of Commerce in Henry and Clayton are doing everything possible to kill the Bill. They do not want us to vote! Three members of Henry’s board of commissioners (Harper, Adams and Holder) voted last week to kill a resolution in support of the Bill.
Taxpayers have the attention of Rep. Lunsford, Rep. Steve Davis and Sen. John Douglas. Also, commissioners Mathis, Stamey and Holman support a vote.
IF YOU CANNOT ATTEND the hearing on Friday, PLEASE contact the members of the legislature and specifically Rep. Lunsford, Rep. Davis and Sen. Douglas. Tell them We Want To Vote!

LETTER to our Legislators – with reply from Senator John Douglas:
Dear Public Official,
As business owners in Clayton County (13 years) and residents of Henry County (4 years), we urge you to vote for H B 1033 to allow a vote on this commuter rail.
We witness, daily, the empty C-TRAN buses roaming around Clayton County, at great taxpayer expense, and foresee this rail line doing the same.
( I even had a conversation with a C-Tran bus driver about a drunk hanging around his bus at the Ingles parking lot in Jonesboro, and he told me he was just giving him a ride home so the police wouldn't pick him up! We are paying hard earned tax money for this?)
The people who would use this, for the most part, do not have cars, so we do not understand how it will save fuel.
And for those with cars, who will guard the cars at the parking decks since it seems to be open season on auto burglary, with no conviction stats, in Clayton and Henry counties?
Who would provide security on the train and the vicinities surrounding the stations? We have looked at all the available data, listened to the supporters and have concluded that this will be a huge tax burden on the taxpayer, especially in the 2.2 sq. mile town of Jonesboro, who just experienced a huge increase in property taxes this year because of fiscal irresponsibility.
The supporters in Jonesboro think it will attract shoppers to downtown. To shop where? At a bunch of attorney offices? That is all that is down there. When you press the Mayor for potential businesses that are interested in locating to Jonesboro, she replies the information is "Confidential"! They say they want to attract restaurants like Applebee's and Ruby Tuesdays, but their alcohol laws are like prohibition days! No alcohol served after 11pm on any day! What national chain would come there? They are anti-business and out of control.
They need to purchase right-of-ways but cannot give the taxpayer estimated costs on this. Do your homework!
In Henry County, we pay four times the property taxes we did in Clayton County, and all we have are poor roads and out of control building to show for it.
So, yes, we need a voice and a vote in both counties since we would bear the burden of funding this commuter rail project. Please support a referendum.
Thank you for your time,
Amy & Greg Berkes

Amy and Greg:
Its a shock here in Atlanta that taxpayers should have a say in what their dollars are spent for.
However, you can plan on seeing this question on the ballot and I am happy to be sponsoring the bill in the Senate to give you a vote on this important issue.
Thank you for the email. Please feel free to contact me again.
Sen. John Douglas
